I almost forgot the rule about not referring to food without a recipe ;)
This is the chili we ate growing up- but it is quite different from your standard sounthern chili, so we have taken to calling it Chili Soup around our place. I still make it pretty much from Mom's (Grandma's?) recipe though, so you can count on it being fabulous. Quick and easy, excellent with corn bread. Doubles and freezes well.
Chili Soup
1 onion, chopped (OK I added this- don't think Mom used to use it)
1 lb. ground beef, browned with the onion
3 potatoes, diced and boiled
1 can chili beans with juices
1 can dark red kidney beans with juices
1 can stewed tomatoes (I usually used petite diced tomatoes instead- the smaller they are the more likely my kids are to actually eat them instead of picking them out!)
16 oz. tomato juice
salt to taste
pepper to taste
1 to 2 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
Mix all together and simmer.
