a casualty

I was going around the house with the WD-40 yesterday, working on the squeaky doors, and my engagement ring came to a sad end. Well, hopefully it is repairable. But I am nonetheless very, very sad about it's current state.

I slid one of our closet doors across and got my hand slammed between the door and the wall. I think the ring actually kept my hand from being hurt, but it was badly bent in the process. And the diamond has been pushed down out of it's setting, leaving the prongs sticking up above it. Thankfully it is still there, so hopefully it can be reset and the band repaired. I had to soap up my hand pretty well to get it off since it was flattened so much! My wedding band was unscathed though- probably because it is thicker. I think the diamond took the brunt of the impact too- there were even paint chips stuck in the prongs! Click on the pictures to see the details of the damage (I am impressed with my camera being able to take such good closeups!)

I love this ring. SO much. Jason found it all on his own at a pawn shop. We went shopping together at actual jeweler too, but nothing matched this ring- it was perfect then and still is (well, it was before this little mishap anyway). I love the white gold, since I never ever wear yellow gold. I love the shape of it, with the round diamonds in square settings. I love that it is old. I love that Jason picked it out himself and knew it was perfect for me. And I love that he got it for $400 (or something like that) and it appraised for a good bit more- so it was frugal! HA! And I love that it is one of a kind- I'll never run into someone wearing the same ring anywhere I go.

So, on to pricing jewelry repair...

  1. That WD-40 is great stuff..if only it could fix that ring. Well, at least you got rid of the squeaks, huh? It was probably due to have the stone checked and cleaned anyway. Good luck with that and your many other projects. Love, Grandpa

  2. Oh my...I'm still trying to visualize how all that must have happened. Someone will be able to fix it, I'm sure of it.

  3. Jennifer, what a sad thing to have happened, you might have to find a jeweler that repairs estate jewelry. Because you want it to look the same. When its fixed Jason will have to propose again.
