update

Nearsighted, farsighted. Each of us got one label or the other, but only one of us needs glasses right now.

Daisy was very slightly nearsighted but since she isn't having headaches and could barely notice a difference with the corrective lenses, she can wait.

I was slightly farsighted, but since I haven't had any trouble up close I can wait as well (and she actually suggested those drugstore reading glasses instead of prescription lenses if I decide I need something). She thought the squinting was more due to fatigue and allergies, which she gave me drops for and told me to get more rest (yeah, right).

Stella was farsighted to the point that she should be for her age (apparently babies are born farsighted and progress toward normal vision as they grow, and then some develop nearsightedness and need glasses) so she looked totally normal for right now.

Lyle (yes she even looked at his eyes!) was actually less farsighted than she would expect for his age, causing her to guess that he will ultimately be nearsighted at a fairly early age. We'll probably want to have him checked regularly once he is a bit older to make sure we get him corrective lenses as soon as he needs them.

And that leaves Hazel :) She was nearsighted to the point of needing glasses for part-time use, and is absolutely thrilled about the whole idea. She has already told me she wants rectangular or oval frames- and bright red, please! The doctor told us she should wear them for any activity requiring her to focus at a distance: watching TV, going to the movies, riding in the car, going to a museum, going shopping, etc. So pretty much anytime we are out, she'll need to have them with her. At home it will mostly be for the TV.

We'll probably go looking later in the week here on post, and to town on Saturday if they don't have anything she likes here. We'll be sure to post about our new adventure back into the world of glasses!

  1. The place on post is pretty small and the most expensive. But it's worth a look, they are pretty smart in there though, and know their stuff.
