worm rescue mission
During a recent stretch of heavy rains, it came to the attention of Hazel, 10, and Stella, 5, of Athens that there were numerous earthworms struggling for life on the sidewalks, driveway, and front porch of their family's residence. So they quickly got into their gear and headed out to take charge of this emergency situation.
Two more dedicated servants to the worm cause the world has never seen.
The girls gently but tirelessly picked up the wayward worms and then transported them via Emergency Escape Bucket to a safer, less water saturated area of their yard. They tried to enlist the help of their younger brother, but he was much more interested in playing with his truck and standing ankle deep in the puddles. He looked really cute though.
"Don't want to touch worms!" was all he would say when asked for a comment.
As if their relocation efforts were not already enough, Hazel and Stella continued their worm protection endeavors later that day when the family loaded up their mini-van for an outing.
"Stop!!" screamed both the girls, running to make sure the driveway was clear of all worms before allowing their father to move the vehicle from it's spot. Fighting back a wave of emotion, he looked proudly on as his daughters wiped their hands on their pants and re-entered the van, the worm heros of the day.

What compassionate and noble girls! Not only are they doing the worms a favor, they're taking good care of the garden soil by keeping those earth turners alive. Of course, the birds might have a few cross words in the morning when they discover that their free feast has been relocated!
