Happy New Year! We started 2007 off right yesterday with a big pot of Black-Eyed Peas. I used this recipe and it was very tasty! Tradition says eating them on New Year's Day brings you good fortune. We had macaroni and cheese with it (so the kids would eat something), and of course, corn bread- but I did skip the Greens this year as Jason is the only one who likes them and I've never done them before. I'll work on that one when we move back to Georgia (do they even sell Collard Greens in California?) Maybe I'll even learn to like them one day.
Yesterday also saw the breaking of the wishbone from our Christmas turkey. Jason had cleaned it off nicely and it had been sitting in our kitchen window to dry, the same as we always did it at our house when I was a kid. The girls could see it in the window from the backyard, and were getting very anxious about when they would get a chance to break it! New Year's Day seemed like a good time to do it. Hazel was the one to get the "Lucky Break" and come away with the larger portion of the bone. She has kept her wish a secret and declared that she was keeping the broken piece of bone (not a surprise- she keeps everything). It's a good thing she was the lucky one too- because she didn't even want to taste the Black-Eyed Peas at lunchtime. So at least she'll have the luck of the wishbone to carry her into the new year. :)
Our first bit of good luck came before we had even eaten the peas of broken the wishbone- Jason was able to get his motorcycle started and thinks he can drive it to Barstow for the first estimate. He'll have to take the windshield off first (Brrrrrrr) because it is so smashed, but at least it is running. Hopefully he can get it into the shop on Friday, when we were planning to go to town anyway. We will update as we find out more.
hazel's hair is a different color... what happened???

We bleached some of the top part in preparation for a bright color (her hair is too dark to show it very well normally)- she is in the choosing stage now- can't make up her mind. We have a test swatch of bright blue and bright red for her to look at today, so maybe we'll get her finished up today or tomorrow :)
ReplyDeleteWOW...HAIR! Glad to hear the bike runs!
