film screening

(Still shot from "The Business of Being Born")

Monday night I took Daisy and her friend Bea to a local screening of "The Business of Being Born". I'd been wanting to see it after hearing so many good things about it, but much more importantly I wanted to make sure Daisy got a chance to see it. I think it is very important for young people to get a healthy understanding about what birth is like, instead of growing up with only the TV sitcom version in their minds (you know- woman's water breaks, everyone freaks out, drive to the hospital in a panic, dad is losing it, mom is screaming and cursing, etc.)

Childbirth is one of my favorite topics, and anyone who knows me can tell you I am very proud of my birth experiences. I am very thankful to have had 4 wonderful births- each of which changed my life in a different and profound way. Birth is a beautiful and wonderful part of life, and I want to pass that attitude along to my children. By helping them understand that birth is not something to fear or dread, we can help set them up for very positive experiences when the time comes for them (the fact that this day could be within a decade is an entirely different discussion. ACK! In 8 short years, Daisy will be the age I was when I had her!)

If creating a better environment for women to give birth in this country is important to you, I'd love it if you would check this movie out and pass the info along to others- especially young people who have yet to begin their journey as parents. Being aware of the options available can make such a difference.

  1. I completely agree with you even though I didn't go see the movie. I saw Ina May Gaskin speak when I was 18. She changed my life in many many ways and motivated me to truly be proud to be a woman. I should tell you about that experience. She and her husband were the key note speakers at the Human Rights Festival. Further proof of why Athens is such a wonderful place.

  2. I'll have to wait till it's out on Disc or VHS...I don't think they're gonna have a showing of this one here, lol. Oh the difference in the birthing world...night and day. And so many are just missing out big time, I tell ya!

You always look even more beautiful when pregnant--you took good care of yourself and was well prepared for the birth of each baby.I give God thanks every day for the wonderful, healthy Grandchildren we have!(One more would make an even dozen!!!) 7. I'm hoping beyond anything to get pregnant again to be able to experience something like this. Four children and each of their births were NOTHING like what I have envisioned. The past three have all revolved around a schedule of some sort that benefited my husband. I hate it (and have hated it). You and Angorknitter have really inspired me to do what I feel is right with my births.
