the aftermath
Sunday we got Jamie back over here with the chainsaw to finish clearing the fallen apple trees. The picture above is from Monday when he came over to just get the tops of the trees cleared away from the back of the house so we could use the door and make sure there wasn't any damage to the house. Then on Sunday, exactly one week after they fell due to heavy snowfall, we were out there in 77 degree weather clearing the debris. We've got some nice full sun back there now and we were really feeling it- this crazy weather!
We are hauling all the smaller branches out to the street to go in the leaf and limb pickup, but the larger logs we stacked up to save for firewood. We'll get back there and split them soon and get them stacked nicely to dry out over the summer. We can give some to friends and use some for camping, and I'd like to get a chimenea for the deck in the fall.
The yard feels like such a different place now. I am sad about the loss of the trees, but trying to look on the bright side. The yard definitely feels much larger now, and we'll be able to grow some grass down there where it used to be just dirt/mud under the trees. We could also have a better chance of growing some veggies with the additional sun coming into the yard, or just enjoy the opened up space for running and playing. We've still got to get the stumps pulled out and get some grass seed down, but it's already like a different yard.
One last look at how the backyard looked 9 days ago...
OK! I'm done being sad about them! Onward and upward!

That does stink about the trees, sorry. On the other hand, that trunk looks half way on the way to a table!
