thunderstorm

We got a pretty big one yesterday evening! The power flickered a number of times and then went out altogether a little before 5 pm. The girls were just getting in the bath, so they got to take their bath by candlelight (no window in the bathroom) which proved to be lots of fun. I was starting dinner and fortunately we have a gas stove, so all I had to do was light it with a match since the ignitors are electric. The power came back on halfway through our candle-lit dinner. I was glad mainly because of the food in the frige and freezer, but also because sleeping was not going to be comfortable without the AC and fans! There were a few more flickers during the evening, enough to reset all the clocks over and over again, so we jsut set our alarm clocks on our cell-phones to be safe.

The biggest disappointment of the power outage came this morning, when we arrived at the pool at 8 am for the girls' lessons, and learned that it was closed. The outage had messed up the pump and the chemical levels were all out of whack. SIGH. They have had a rocky 2 weeks at that pool- lots of transition wth instructors and times have been changed, classes rescheduled due to other pump and temperature problems... everything that could go wrong, HAS. But such is life. I think that a big plate of cookies is in order for the staff over there, once we finish our lessons. The girls have had a blast even with all the troubles, and have been learning SO much!

  1. Ohhhhh, I was all fixated on how my gas stove wouldn't turn on...and I never once thought I could make it work by lighting a match...that's good to know. Figures I grew up with electric stoves...never had gas stove till I was 21. So I was marinating a little steak for us...and was so afraid the stove would stop working while I was cooking that I heated leftovers in the microwave when the power flickered on.
