Saturday we spent most of the day in downtown Athens, checking out all the festivities and races of the Athens Twilight Criterium. The kids did really well and we were able to see a lot more of the racing than we had expected. We moved around the track quite a bit and got to see a little of each of the amateur, handcycling, children's, women's, and men's races. We watched from the street along the straightaway and on the corners, and we climbed to the top of the parking ramp (7 floors) to watch the men's race from above for a while, which was really cool- especially since it was dark out by that time.
Of course, I was without my camera. We really need to get a nice, compact camera for outings. I love Sally very, very, very much, but she is just too big and heavy to tote around when you are carrying a baby on your back and pushing a 4 year old in a stroller. I sure was wishing I had brought her last night though- there were some great shots to be had. I won't make that mistake next year.
So here is a short video clip to give you a feel for what we saw:
(In case that doesn't work for you, the video can be viewed here.)
It was quite thrilling to stand just a few feet away from these guys whizzing past at such high speeds- the kids were amazed at the wind created just by people on bicycles! We are already looking forward to next year's race, and Lyle is VERY excited about bikes! We need to get him a helmet so we can put him in the Doodlebug and start going on family bike rides again.
