self video portrait
Just a little look at the magic that is Stella. She has been asking to use the Photo Booth program on our laptop a lot more since we upgraded and have video capabilities. This is just one of the many awesome videos we have found on there!
For anyone reading who does not know Stella personally, this video clip is a rare look inside her personality when nobody is watching her. We don't get to see this very often!

teen film fest

Saturday night was the Teen Film Festival at the library. Daisy and Beatrice worked very hard filming and editing their videos together. They included a number of their friends (and even some of the parents!) in the films, and everyone got dressed up to go to the big premier together!

It was so awesome to see how much support and love these kids are surrounded by, evidenced that night by the twenty-one people we packed into the front two rows of the auditorium! Everyone was so excited just to see the films and cheer for Daisy & Bea. And then came the award ceremony! Between the two of them they took home 5 out of the 9 "Lucy" awards given away, including Best Film. It was a fantastic night!

Posting these videos to the internet has proven to be a bit of a challenge for me, mainly because they used some copyrighted music in the films and YouTube removed the audio for one of them. (lesson learned for next time!) For now, hopefully you can view the first film right here (below) and the second one is available here on YouTube (I posted that one below the first one now). They do go in order, so be sure to watch "What's it all Mean?" first, followed by "What Happened Before?" Thanks for watching!
I am so proud of these guys for following through to completion on this project! We all learned a lot about the software and also about the steps of putting a film together while working on this, and I know that the kids are all brimming with more cool ideas for upcoming films. I also want to thank Jason Hubbard for being such a great sport and doing whatever the girls asked them to for his part. That really made a huge impact on their project!
Update: We were Spotted!
(not) back to school
What a week! Even though Monday was a holiday, the kids and I packed so much into the rest of the week that it has seemed long. Our Spanish language group is back in full swing now, and we met at Bear Hollow on Tuesday so the kids could learn the names for all the animals en EspaƱol. It felt great to get out of the classroom and out into the real world so everyone could really connect the new words visually. We are planning similar trips in the near future, to the library and the grocery store as well as other places. (Grr. I forgot the camera on Monday. But Sarah didn't! She has an awesome post about our outing here.)

Wednesday, the kids and I went over to visit the State Botanical Garden. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time. It is SO nice to be able to get out and go somewhere without everyone complaining about how hot it is for a change! We wandered around and looked at all the plants, and we were able to see a number of critters as well- a toad, some frogs, some fish, and several lizards. We even brought some bubbles to blow while we sat down for a snack under the gazebo. I think we will return again soon- this is a great place to be outside and there is so much to see and learn about. There is a fantastic exhibit of photographs there right now, by Robert Creamer. Daisy and I really enjoyed looking at these together (while we tried to wrangle the other kids, who were clearly uninterested in photos and only wanted to climb on things...) This collection was of digital scans of flowers and was truly breathtaking. Athens folks will want to be sure to get over there and check these out- remember there is no admission cost to the Botanical Garden.

And finally, yesterday was our first day back at ACE (Athens Cooperative Experience), our local homeschool learning co-op. It was so good to be back and see some familiar faces, as well as some new ones. Stella and Lyle thoroughly enjoyed the Preschool Fun group- with apples as our theme we sang some songs and made an art project together. Daisy and Hazel went on a hike and learned about poison ivy among other plants, with the Plant Identification group. This class is taught by our co-op's only dad, who has a wealth of information about plants and animals to share with the kids. I look forward to learning a lot through Daisy and Hazel during this session, even though I cannot attend with them (since I stay with Stella & Lyle).
The icing on the cake of our first day back at ACE was a drumming session with Dr. Arvin Scott, who does a program called Drumming for Success. This was such an exhilarating session! The energy was just amazing as he helped the kids learn a little about drumming. I know Daisy and Hazel got a lot out of participating, and Stella and Lyle got in on things just a little and then went about their playtime to the beat of the drums.

Here is a video so you can hear the drums a little- I think they sounded much better in real life though!
Whew! Today we are going to hit the park and then come home and relax, and get the house cleaned up a bit so we can enjoy our weekend with Daddy. How does the house get so messy when we are gone all week?!

Oh I almost forgot- we've also been working on some crafting this week! Daisy and I are making a duvet cover to go over a quilt for her bed. We are making it like a patchwork quilt, but it will just slip over a quilt we already have. Here is a photo of the squares layed out on the floor- we are in the process now of sewing them together. We still need to track down a flat sheet to use for the backing, and then we'll be almost done. I can't wait to get this in her room to brighten things up and start really making it her own.

the flip

I've had my eye on this for a while, after seeing a handmade case for one on a blog recently (of course, I can't for the life of me remember which blog...) I liked that they were small, cheap, easy to use, cheap, basic (read: no bells and whistles to break), cheap, and the videos upload easily to your computer. Did I mention they are cheap? And when you have a $20 gift certificate laying around for Amazon (thanks, Rebecca!!), and that is the best price around to begin with, the logical thing to do is just to make the purchase. So I did and it's here and now everyone in Blogland will get to hear our voices and see our crazy level of motion and noise and excitement first hand!
So, let the videos begin.
We'll start with this gem I shot in the car the other day. Make sure you swallow your coffee before you hit play- we don't want you getting your keyboard wet.
I do apologize to those readers who cannot view videos at work, etc. I won't make videos a part of my posts too often, but I do want to include them regularly. So I hope you are able to watch at home. This particular video featuring Stella & Lyle rocking out to music in the car is definitely worth a special trip to a YouTube friendly computer!
better late than never
Here is Lyle chatting on the phone with Daddy. We call him every morning and I put the phone on the speaker phone setting so Lyle can hear him better, and so I can talk too if Lyle needs help. It is such a great way to start our day! Now I just need to get a different video camera so I can record more than 30 seconds at a time.
concert

Jason took Daisy to go see The Avett Brothers play in Los Angeles this weekend. I was completely jealous but a 3 hour drive (one way) plus a 4 hour show is just one of those things I have to pass up as a full-time nursing mom. So Daisy got to go instead, and they had a blast.
The show was at the El Rey Theatre, and featured Langhorne Slim opening for The Avett Brothers, who are being played almost constantly around here these days and enjoyed by every one of us. Daisy and Jason both had lots to tell about, and even got a few pictures and videos with Daisy's camera (which they were sure to bring since the likes of Sally were strictly prohibited in the theatre).

They purchased some t-shirts (an essential part of the rock concert experience, in my opinion) and even went back in after things died down to see if they could meet the band. Daisy got to have her picture taken with Scott Avett (the one who plays the banjo) and Bob Crawford (Bass), which pretty much puts the icing on the cake after a good concert, doesn't it?

one man band, with bonus
I was trying to get a nice little video of Lyle playing the recorder- he is really getting good. But he had other business to attend to.
